An illustrator or designer must not only create a quality finished product, he or she must be able to work hand in hand with the client in order to achieve that end. For many years my official title was “concept artist”. It was my job to construct a visual that aligned with the desired message of the client. Most often this process began with a simple rough “napkin sketch” — submitted to the client for approval of concept. Such a sketch may have taken only ten minutes to an hour to develop, but it was always a crucial first step. Creating a visual is invariably an iterative process. For that reason I've decided to show three typical stages in that process: Napkin Sketch, Prototype Concept Sketch and Finished Artwork.
